The Answer
"Only to the extent the hips and shoulders have full range of motion and powerful rotation can the ath
lete maintain the proper spine angle in hitting."
The hips are an important component in the golf swing. In the backswing, the upper body torques around the backside hip (the hip farthest away from the target or ball) and if all the muscles around that hip are in the correct position and strong, more torque may be generated because they have the capacity to store maximum energy. Strong hip rotators give golfers the ability to fully load the back side hip in rotation. This provides a powerful, but smooth release of energy which gives the potential for much greater hitting speed.
The lead hip is responsible for stabilization and deceleration, not generating power. To create maximum centrifugal force, once the lead hip is planted, it stops rotation from that hip, down to the foot, and the entire body rotates around it at great speed. Properly trained hip rotators will allow for greater practice and playing time with less chance of soreness, stiffness and injury.
Properly positioned muscles and fascia that surround the hip/pelvis/low back area directly affect the opposite side shoulder. Proper transmission of energy from the lower extremity to the upper extremity positively affects timing, coordination, and rhythm.
